Good medical care is available in Spain but you are advised to take out comprehensive travel insurance before travelling, to cover any medical costs that may be incurred. Be warned that doctors will generally require immediate payment for any treatment received. All visitors must pay for prescribed medicine and any dental treatment required while in Spain.
A reciprocal health agreement with the EEA means that treatment provided in Spanish Health Service hospitals and health centres (ambulatorios) and by Spanish Health Service doctors is free to EU citizens and those from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, on presentation of a valid EHIC(European Health Insurance Card, which replaces form E111 as of January 1, 2006), which you must obtain before you travel. You may still have to pay on receiving the treatment and then claim it back afterwards.

Like in any major tourist town you should use common sense to safeguard your possessions while in Malaga. Keep bags closed at all times, do not carry large sums of cash about your person, and leave all important documents locked in your hotel - preferably in the safe - when you go out and about.
If visiting a beach do not leave your belongings unattended at any time. It is a good idea to take no items to the beach that you can't afford to lose as it is very easy to mislay objects on the sand or lose them in the sea. The beach is also a popular haunt of thieves who will help themselves to objects left unattended for even a short period of time.
Also do not purchase any drinks or fruit from vendors who approach you on the beach. Tempting as it may seem to have a cooling drink or slice of watermelon the prices always vastly inflated - and we mean vastly. If you take anything proffered to you it will usually be considered sold and payment will be demanded quite forcefully. It's not a pleasant experience and more often than not tourists will pay to avoid embarrassment, an expensive lesson. Beachside bars and cafés offer much better value.
Take care at night when holidaymakers quite often drink to excess and, although usually harmless, can be offensive and embarrassing. You should also take care to stick to the more well lit areas of the town, particularly if alone.
A police station is located at: Avenida de la Rosaleda 19 | Tel: +34 95-212-6500.
