Although capital of the Costa del Sol, the city of Malaga seldom makes it onto the postcards, which favour images of bronzed bodies and sun-bleached sand.
It's a shame, because beyond the stereotypes of a large city, Malaga offers a unique taste of Spain, replete with the friendliest people in Andalucia and a rich, accessible history that proves just as interesting as the beach.
Malaga's story is a fascinating one, occupied in turn by Phoenicians, the Romans, the Moors and finally by European tourists, this energetic seaport gave birth to Picasso, and saw the rise of Franco during the Spanish civil war.
This history is richly evident in buildings such as the impressive Moorish Alcazaba, the Phoenician Gibralfaro lighthouse and the Stone Age Nerja Caves. The seafood is legendary, particularly the fried fish - widely acknowledged to be the best in Spain.
Meanwhile, the city's bars and cafés are ideal both for the perfect espresso or a lazy sundowner. For the more active traveller there are highly-rated golf courses and even ski resorts not far from the city, and, naturally, miles and miles of golden beaches that attract sunseekers in their thousands.
