Although it gets busy in summer, both the airport and the city centre have an adequate transport infrastructure with local bus services in particular being recently upgraded to a high standard.
Malaga Airport is situated 8km from the city centre. The airport is extremely busy in the summer season but is well connected to the city via public transport.
There is a train that runs from outside the departure hall of the international terminal. The trains run every half hour, journey time is 12 minutes. The service runs from 07h01-23h45.
There is also a frequent bus service from the airport to Malaga (Paseo del Parque) costing EUR0.90 and taxis are available from the airport's taxi ranks to various locations along the Costa del Sol.
Malaga's rail links include national links to Madrid (four-and-a-half hours away) and Barcelona, as well as local services to other towns in central Spain and along the costa. RENFE, the Spanish rail company, operate a Coastal Train (C1), which links Malaga with Fuengirola along most of the Costa del Sol. The station is located at: Explanada de la Estación. For full details of timetables and fares telephone the RENFE national information line on Tel: +34 902-24-0202.
The local bus service, although comprehensive, can be confusing for visitors. Within the city, buses are operated by EMT, while Portillo takes over for most of the services down the coast. There are a variety of coach companies operating out of the bus station as well, with buses leaving Malaga regularly for destinations throughout Spain.
Malaga is embracing buses as a means to alleviate congestion in the city, consequently you can expect modern, efficient buses on most routes.

If you want to explore the area away from or along the coast car hire is a very good option. Malaga has dozens of local car hire companies as well as all the usual international names. Beware of car crime in the city, obvious hire cars are particular targets. Major car hire firms can be found at the airport and in the city centre.
Within Malaga, taxis are plentiful. Official cabs should be metered but often outside the city taxis work on fixed tariffs to some destinations. Make sure you know the price before you undertake a journey. Most legitimate cab drivers will show you the official tariff sheet that all official cabs adhere to.
